Mixed Media - Visual Arts

In Term 2 our Visual Arts focused was on Mixed Media. We finally finished
our pieces of art at the end of the term. We started off by creating two hands, most of us copied our own hands as templates.  One hand represents our past and the other hand our future. We used lots of different materials and symbols to make our artwork as well as exploring a range of different techniques with watercolor paint. This is my art work.

St Mary MacKillop day

St Mary MacKillop day

Another celebration for Good Shepherd School in Week 3 was the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. St Mary MacKillop a vital part of Good Shepherd School, this is because she was the founder of the Josephites aka the Brown Joes. The Brown Joes travelled all over Australia and New Zealand helping the poor and those in need. They built schools and that is how we are all students at Good Shepherd School. We celebrated the Feast day by going to a Mass for St Mary of the Cross and also having fun with our buddy class Room 4 as we worked on a St Mary MacKillop Art project.

the water cycle

water cycle

Have you ever thought about where the water we drink comes from? Many people do not even think about the water that flows out of a tap. All the water in the world is part of the water cycle. A cycle is when a series of steps repeat itself over and over. Each stage of the water cycle repeats itself. The earth is covered by at least three quarters of water. Most of this water on earth is salt water, 97 percent to be exact. This leaves 3 percent fresh water but only 1 percent is drinkable. The water cycle goes through three main stages evaporation, condensation and precipitation. After these stages take place we have our lovely drinkable water.
Evaporation happens when the sun heats up the water in seas, rivers, lakes or bodies of water. The heat from the sun makes the water evaporate from a small body of water like a puddle. Once the heat is added to the liquid it starts to transform the water into a gas called water vapor. Water vapor is actually invisible so you can’t see it. The water vapor goes high up into the sky. However once it reaches high up into the atmosphere it starts to get cooler which then starts the next stage in the water cycle.
The next stage is condensation. How does condensation work? Condensation is when water vapor gets higher and higher into the atmosphere. The water vapours starting to cool down turning back into tiny water drops that form together to make a cloud in the sky. The clouds gets heavier and heavier until the clouds are forced to drop the tiny water droplets.
So how does precipitation work? Precipitation is when the clouds get heavier and colder that the water in the cloud turn back into tiny water droplets.  They come together as water vapour that turns into tiny little droplets. The water droplets can freeze, making them fall as snow, sleet or hail. The higher the cloud the more chance there is of snow because the air is colder and thinner which impacts on the temperature of the water vapour.  This means there is no snow in hotter areas as the water vapour does not freeze in the warm temperature. All water will fall back down to earth, this is precipitation.
So those are the steps in the water cycle and to keep this great cycle going we need to not waste water to help the earth.

water care

Water, water everywhere! On Friday of week 6, we were lucky to have Sally from Water care come to teach us more about the water. We did a drama activity and experiments. Firstly we examined the process that water goes through to become drinkable water in our households. Our drama was based on the process that the water goes through to be cleaned. We were the water going through each stage. We had so much fun as we ventured around the school. Once we learnt how water is cleaned we then had to try and clean the dirty water ourselves. We had to create a filter system in partners. We had to do four different tests for our experiments. We experimented with a range of filters to try and test which filter system was the best.

cross country

Good Shepherd School had been busy training for cross country this term and finally the day arrived. In week 6 we all arrived at school in our running gear and had our house colours painted onto us. We were eager and ready to go and win house point. Overall the race was long and required a lot of stamina, but we were prepared. Here are some pictures from our races.

My Accident story

A Boating Good Time

February 2019

Pippa

I am learning to entertain my audience through a recount

Like most good accident stories they always start out boring. We were up at the bach, deep in the heart of Whitianga on a very normal afternoon. My sister Jess and I were entertaining our cousins as we explored the creek at the end of the beach. Now to get to the creek we simply jump in kayaks and paddle

down to the creek (cause nobody likes walking to the creek).

We took the kayaks out but there was not enough for everyone. So my big cousin Eddie and I took the rowboat down. When we got there we played in the water. Once we were done fooling around our cousins asked us if we could take there towel back to the house in the rowboat. They were very lazy indeed. So Eddie and I said, “Yes.”

On the way back I asked Eddie if it was possible to surf a wave in a small boat. I thought he would would be the one to know, you see he was a Lifeguard and did surf life saving. But apparently he didn’t know as they don’t do this. At this point I suggested that we could try, we rowed out to where the waves were starting to come in, we got as close as we could to the next wave. We paddled and paddled, then the wave came up behind us we. This was the moment to see if my bright idea would worked.

The wave caught up to us, and started to splash at our back, water poured into the boat. It became a race against time, we shuffled forward so that the water would not make the boat sink as it filled from behind. But we shuffled too much the boat nose dive from all our weight. The nose going under flipped the boat, we were now trapped under the boat. Stuck between the sand and the boat, we were too shallow to swim under. We were trapped.

Holding my breath for what seemed like forever but I’m sure was only a few seconds, we managed to have breathing space once the wave had settled. Turning to Eddie I said, “What if another wave comes Eddie, we will drown?” Eddie looked at me with confidence, “Nope Pippa, we aren’t going to die here today.” With all his strength he pushed from his knees forcing the boat up and off us. Freeing us from the trapped boat.

That was the day that my older cousin Eddie save me, I guess all that life saving did pay off. Eddie was confident in the face of danger. This story lives on when our family comes together, Eddie also has the nickname Aquaman now. And by the way all the towels we were carrying got all wet and floated on the ocean.

Swimming Sports

Swimming sports

Room 6 had a wonderful day at swimming sports. When we all went to the turf we split up into our houses. Thank you Sharyn and parents for helping us with the non competitive swimming and competitive. Also thank you parents for coming along and supporting your children. Good shepherd students thank the teachers very warmly, as every year as they set up and prepare this event for us. I’m sure that every student enjoyed the event. I saw everyone compete with my own eyes and they all did well. The people who lost don’t have to be sad because they should be grateful they got a swim in the warm weather also because there’s always time and effort to improve.

Ash Wednesday

Today was Ash Wednesday. We went to church and sang some hymns, got the ashes on our foreheads, sung happy birthday to a little girl starting school on her birthday! We then went up and got a blessing.

We did make an attempt to keep our ashes on our foreheads, but that was a fail due to swimming and itching it off. We had a good day and hope everyone season of Lent and it is a time of preparation.

Treaty of Waitangi Art

After learning about the Treaty of Waitangi, the year 5s took inspiration from the Maori culture and their learning to capture some of the designs. This is my Maori pastel art:

Treaty Of Waitangi

During week 1 we were learning about the Treaty of Waitangi. The Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand's founding document. The name is taken from the place in the Bay of Islands where it was first signed, on 6 February 1840. New Zealand recognise this special day with a public holiday. The Treaty of Waitangi is an important agreement that was signed by representatives of the British Crown and Māori in 1840. The purpose of the Treaty was to enable the British settlers and the Māori people to live together in New Zealand under a common set of laws or agreements.

Here is a picture of our factual posters:

Piece of the puzzle

In Room 6 we are all a piece of the puzzle. There are 29 students and we each complete our puzzle. Without one of us we would not be Room 6. During the second week of school (once the year 6 were back from camp) we spent time learning about each other and completing our piece of the puzzle. We learnt that we are all different and unique made in the image of God. But we also learnt that sometimes people need a little helping hand to make learning fair. Check out our pieces of the puzzle in Room 6 Foyer to learn more about each of us.

“It’s always the small pieces that make the big picture.”

Charism

Did you know the reason Good Shepherd School named their syndicates Connolly and Sheridan? Connolly and Sheridan were the names of the first two sisters that worked at Good Shepherd School when it opened. That is just one of the fun facts we learnt this week when we explored the charism of our school. The charism of our school is the flavour of our school, it is what makes us Good Shepherd School. Over the week we looked at the history of the school and unpacked the visual Image of the Good Shepherd Cross with the values, scripture, feast days and the St Mary MacKillop sayings. We unpacked the values and why we have those values. In groups we identified what each value looked, sounded and felt like before making up definitions. Another new fact I learnt was the sisters were called the Brown Joes also because of their brown outfits.
